Bigg Boss 17 is taking over screens all across India with many contestants gaining massive popularity over night. One such contestant is rapper Firoza Khan who goes by the name of Khanzaadi.

In a shocking revelation, she revealed that she had been on a wheelchair for three years. After receiving massive trolling as netizens questioned whether she's lying, Tariq Salim, a Dubai based doctor who treated Khanzaadi clarified that she is indeed telling the truth and suffers from an incurable condition called Ankylosing Spondylosis.

What Is Ankylosing Spondylosis?

According to an overview published by the National Institute of Arthritis And Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, 'Ankylosing spondylitis is a type of arthritis that causes inflammation in the joints and ligaments of the spine.'

This autoimmune condition often begins with lower back pain and stiffness, gradually progressing to involve the entire spine. Morning stiffness is a hallmark, and over time, individuals may experience reduced flexibility and mobility.

Dr Tariq shared how Khanzaadi approached him with extreme physical pain in May 2017. Her condition eventually left her in a wheelchair as she was unable to move at all.

Even diagnosing Ankylosing Spondylosis is challenging, as its symptoms overlap with other conditions.

Ankylosing Spondylitis can significantly impact the quality of life for those affected. Chronic back pain, fatigue, and limitations in mobility may lead to emotional and psychological challenges.

The same could be the case for Khanzaadi, whose frequent trips to the doctors in BiggBoss house and complaints of health issues are quite noticeable and have been pointed out numerous times by her co-contestants.

Dr Tariq shared that his 10 years of experience in the line of Ankylosing Spondylosis helped him to decide a treatment plan for Khanzaadi, which allowed her to continue her regular life without a wheelchair.

While there is no cure for Ankylosing Spondylosis, various treatment approaches aim to alleviate symptoms and improve function. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), and biologics are common medications used to manage inflammation. Physical therapy and regular exercise are also key components of a comprehensive treatment plan.

Adopting a healthy lifestyle is crucial for managing Ankylosing Spondylitis. Maintaining a balanced diet, avoiding smoking, and incorporating regular exercise can help manage symptoms and improve overall well-being.

Increased awareness, research, and collaboration between healthcare providers and patients are vital in advancing the understanding and management of Ankylosing Spondylitis.
