A growing public health concern, dry eye disease (DED) remains largely undiagnosed. According to estimates, 7.4% to 33.7% of people suffer from DED. It majorly hampers daily activities and the level of productivity at work. Digital eye strain is a condition characterised by feelings of eye discomfort, such as watery, red, or itchiness. Additionally, the patient may experience dryness in the eyes. Complaints of blurry vision and eye strain are common which can reduce concentration. Other symptoms may include glare, sensitivity to light, difficulty in keeping the eyes open, headaches, and soreness in the neck or back. In this article, Dr Soham Basak, Consultant Cornea and External Disease, Disha Eye Hospitals shares effective tips for workplace eye wellness to keep dry eye disease at bay.

Factors Causing Dry Eye Disease At Workplace

The use of digital devices has skyrocketed over the last decade, increasing the risk of DED. “People of all ages use mobile and other diigital devices but as comapared to younger adults, older adults are found to be more engaged to the devices. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the global average daily smartphone screen time grew from 2.25 to 4.8 hours. In India too, its use rose from an average of 2.42 to 6.9 hours, an increase of nearly 68%. Computer-related symptoms could include blurred near or distance vision and difficulty in refocusing after prolonged computer work,” explains Dr Basak.

How to manage the condition?

Dry eye disease is both preventable and manageable with the right steps taken. Dr Basak has shared these suggestions to reduce the impact of digital eye strain:

Dry Eye Disease At Workplace

  • Place your computer screen at an angle that doesn’t reflect glare
  • Ensure a distance of 20 inches from the screen.
  • Place the computer slightly below the line of sight.
  • Practise the 20-20-20 rule. Set a timer and look 20 feet away from the screen every 20 minutes for 20 seconds.
  • Those with glasses or contact lenses should consult a doctor about glasses designed especially for computer screens.

Manage Dry Eyes Through Diet

Nutrition is a crucial part of disease prevention including eye diseases. Including certain vitamins and minerals to your daily diet can boost eye health and manage potential eye conditions. If you are experiencing symptoms of dry eye disease at workplace, you must include these foods to your diet:

Fish- Cold water fishes such as cod, salmon and tuna are rich in omega-3 fatty acids that are known to improve eye functions.

Carrots- Rich in vitamin A, carrots are the best food for eyes.

Avocado- This fruit contains many nutrients including vitamins B6, C, E and minerals like potassium and magnesium.

Kale and Spinach- These greens have nutrients like vitamin C, lutein and zeaxanthin which can boost eye health and prevent eye problems.

Final Word

These simple practices can significantly reduce the impact of DED and help improve the quality of life. At a management level, various strategies such as ergonomic considerations, education and awareness programmes, eye care resources, and flexible work arrangements can be implemented in the workplace to support employees.

Employers have the responsibility to consider an employee’s health as a priority. They should strive to address dry eye syndrome and promote a supportive work environment. Moreover, collaboration between HR departments, occupational health professionals, and employees is crucial to identify and implement effective strategies for dry eye management. Not only will this increase productivity but will also encourage employees to take care of themselves.
