Handwashing was always important but it caught attention after the covid-19 pandemic hit. Suddenly, we started to maintain hand hygiene to prevent the fatal virus and other diseases that can be caused due to poor hygiene. However, some people believe that washing hands is necessary only after a few tasks such as using the washroom or after contacting dirt. Through this video, we would like to highlight that handwashing plays a significant role in promoting overall health. This daily practice can ward off many chronic as well as acute diseases.

Why is handwashing important?

Our hands are exposed to numerous surfaces that make them a potential carrier of microbial contamination. The pathogens on our hands can easily sneak into the body as we touch our eyes, nose and mouth with our contaminated hands. These pathogens get into the body and cause various illnesses and infections. Thus, regular hand washing can avert this risk by eliminating pathogens from the hands. We must make it a habit to wash hands often with soap especially after coming in contact with potentially contaminated surfaces. This includes washrooms, kitchen, public places, transport and things handled by a sick person.

Additionally, your hands may become dry and itchy due to frequent use of soaps. Therefore, it is suggested to use herbal and gentle soaps to reduce dryness. Moisturise your hands often to keep them hydrated and soft. This would prevent illnesses without making your hands feel dry.
