Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that primarily target the respiratory system.

If you suspect you've been infected by influenza, it's important to know the key facts about the illness and what steps you can take to manage it.

Common symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, fatigue, and sometimes vomiting and diarrhoea. These symptoms can appear suddenly and might make you feel quite unwell.

According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, children are the most likely to become ill from the flu, while individuals 65 and older are the least likely.

Differentiating Between the Flu and the Common Cold

“While the flu and the common cold share some symptoms, they are caused by different viruses and have distinct characteristics. The flu often comes on suddenly with more intense symptoms, such as high fever and severe body aches. On the other hand, the common cold tends to have milder symptoms and a more gradual onset,” described Dr Ganesh Chaudhary, PHC, Darbhanga, Bihar.

When to Seek Medical Attention

“Most cases of the flu can be managed at home with plenty of rest, fluids, and over-the-counter medications to relieve symptoms. However, certain groups are at a higher risk of developing complications from the flu, including young children, the elderly, pregnant individuals, and those with underlying health conditions”, Dr Chaudhary added.

If you or a loved one falls into one of these categories or if symptoms worsen significantly, seek medical attention promptly.

How To Prevent The Spread of the Flu

Influenza is highly contagious and can easily spread through respiratory droplets from coughs and sneezes. To prevent the spread of the flu, practise good hygiene by washing your hands frequently, covering your mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing, and avoiding close contact with sick individuals.

Vaccination: Your Best Defence

The most effective way to protect yourself from the flu is by getting an annual flu vaccine. The vaccine is designed to target the most prevalent strains of the virus for that season. It not only helps prevent infection but also reduces the severity of symptoms if you do get infected.

Tips To Manage Symptoms

“If you do contract the flu, get plenty of rest and stay hydrated. Over-the-counter pain relievers and fever reducers can help alleviate discomfort. Stay home to avoid spreading the virus to others, and gradually resume your normal activities once you've fully recovered”, Dr Chaudhary stated.

Influenza is a common and potentially serious illness that can impact anyone. Knowing the signs, taking preventive measures, and seeking medical attention when necessary can help you manage the flu effectively.
