Diabetes is a growing concern among people of all age groups. Earlier, which was an old-age disease, has now become widespread. Several factors contribute to the cause of diabetes, including an unhealthy lifestyle, improper diet, lack of exercising, etc. November 14 is observed as the World Diabetes Day to spread awareness about this health concern. To start with, there are four types of diabetes:

  • Type 1
  • Type 2
  • Type 1.5
  • Gestational

In type 1 diabetes, the beta cells of the pancreas are destroyed, and thus insulin is not formed. According to the Ministry of Health, type 1 diabetes occurs in only 1% to 2% of cases in India. Whereas, type 2 means very high blood sugar levels, which is very difficult to control. In this condition, the patient feels more thirsty, frequent urination and frequent hunger problems. It can happen to anyone but is seen more in children. In type 2 diabetes, the body is unable to use insulin properly. Before we start with anything, one should know the basic symptoms of diabetes and ways to control those symptoms for effective management of the disease. Dr Pratap Singh, Associate Professor, Medicine At RML Hospital, Delhi tells us about the different types of diabetes and its symptoms for easy diagnosis and management of the disease.
