We spoke to our expert Dr Sanjay Kumar, Consultant General Physician, Cygnus Laxmi Hospital, who explained why drinking warm salt water is good for your health.

Dr Kumar informed, “The salt in warm water contains essential electrolytes like sodium and chloride. These electrolytes are crucial for nerve function, muscle contractions, and maintaining overall electrolyte balance.”

Dr Kumar said, “Consuming saltwater on an empty stomach helps prevent the accumulation of fat and positively influences the weight loss process.” It can also help to curb your cravings and cleanse your digestive system by removing toxins from your body, eventually leading to weight loss.

Another benefit of warm salt water is that it helps in promoting oral health. “Gargling with warm salt water may help in maintaining oral hygiene by reducing bacteria in the mouth, potentially aiding in the prevention of gum issues and bad breath”, said Dr Kumar.

If you are dealing with digestive problems, give salt water a try. Consuming it in moderation may stimulate digestive enzymes, potentially aiding in the digestive process and helping with issues like indigestion.

In a study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine in 2010, it was found that the combination of consuming lukewarm salt water and performing specific yoga postures effectively prepared the bowel for a colonoscopy.

Dr Kumar added, “Warm salt water may support detoxification by promoting sweating. Also, it can activate your kidneys and liver, helping your body get rid of waste.”

Salt is a source of essential minerals like iodine, which is crucial for thyroid function, and other trace minerals that play various roles in the body's proper functioning.

Skin Conditions

Dr Kumar said, “Warm salt water baths may be beneficial for certain skin conditions, such as eczema or psoriasis, by helping to cleanse and soothe the skin. It helps in maintaining the pH levels of the body and reducing inflammation.”

Dr Kumar highlighted, “It's essential to note that excessive salt intake can have adverse effects, such as nausea, vomiting, and high blood pressure. Therefore, moderation is the key.
