Dr Tayal advised to include four servings of non-starchy green and yellow vegetables in your daily diet. These include spinach, bell peppers, lettuce, broccoli, carrots, and beans. Non-starchy vegetables are low in carbohydrates and rich in nutrients, making them an ideal choice for managing blood sugar levels.
Fresh Fruits
Dr Tayal said to consume 2-4 servings of seasonal fruits daily, such as bananas, apples, oranges, and kiwis. However, it is important to avoid fruit juices as they lack fibre and can cause rapid spikes in blood sugar levels. Opt for whole fruits instead.
Avoid Refined Flour and Sugar
You should avoid refined flour and sugar, as they have a high glycemic index, meaning they cause a rapid spike in blood sugar levels. Instead, focus on complex carbohydrates such as wheat, millet, pulses, brown rice, oats, and peas. These provide sustained energy and are healthier options.
Moderation in Dairy Products
Dairy products, such as curd and cheese should be consumed in moderation. Dr Tayal added that you should choose low-fat or skim versions to reduce saturated fat intake. Dairy products provide calcium and other essential nutrients, but portion control is important.

Aim for an intake of 50-75 grams of protein per day, which can be obtained from sources like beans, eggs, chicken, fish, and paneer (cottage cheese). Protein helps stabilise blood sugar levels and supports the growth and development of the baby.

Dr Tayal said that you should incorporate healthy fats containing omega-3 fatty acids, which are beneficial for the baby's growth. Good sources include walnuts, almonds, peanuts, flaxseeds, pumpkin seeds, and oils, such as groundnut oil, sesame oil, and olive oil. However, you need to avoid consuming trans fats and saturated fats.
