Can Men Also Get Breast Cancer? Expert Answers

Breast cancer is often considered a women-only condition because most people do not know that men can also get breast cancer. Yes, this might sound weird but men are equally at risk of breast cancer as women. However, the proportion of breast cancer in females is higher than males but this doesn't reduce the risk. According to  Dr Mandeep Singh Malhotra, Director of Surgical Oncology, CK Birla Hospital, Delhi, one percent of the total breast cancer diagnoses are in men.

Doctor shares that male breast cancer is often diagnosed in later years of life such as the 60s and 70s. There are certain factors that increase the risk of male breast cancer, including:

  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Men who are undergoing any hormonal therapy
  • Certain medications also lead to high estrogen hormone production in men that can trigger breast cancer
  • Obesity
  • Some genetic conditions like klinefelter syndrome also increase the risk of breast cancer in men
  • Having family history of breast cancer and prostate cancer
  • Consumption of foods containing pesticides

Talking about the diagnosis of male breast cancer, expert shares that men should watch out for potential warning signs such as body pain, a lymph, change in nipple size and fluid discharge from nipples. Men should not ignore these signs as this can help prevent, diagnose and treat male breast cancer on time.
