As pollution is on the rise, people living with dust allergies are experiencing increasingly hard times. Sneezing, itchy eyes, and congestion are common symptoms of dust allergies that disrupt daily life. While modern medicine offers effective treatments, some individuals prefer a more holistic approach. Looking towards Ayurveda for a solution, the team of OnlyMyHealth spoke to Dr Ganesh Chaudhary, Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery, PHC, Darbhanga, Bihar.

Ayurveda For Dust Allergy Relief

Ayurvedic Remedies For Dust Allergy

“Dust allergies occur when the immune system reacts to dust particles or other particles found in dust, such as dust mites, pollen, mould spores, or pet dander,” explained Dr Chaudhary. Listing a set of ways by which Ayurveda can help you deal with dust allergy in this upcoming pollution season, he shared:

Diet and Nutrition

A balanced diet is essential to support the body's natural defences, Dr Chaudhary shared, adding that “Foods rich in vitamin C, such as citrus fruits, and omega-3 fatty acids, found in flaxseeds and walnuts, can help reduce allergy symptoms.”

Herbal Supplements

“Ayurvedic herbs like Triphala, Tulsi, and Licorice can be consumed as supplements or in teas to provide relief,” recommended Dr Chaudhary. Even a study published in ‘Frontiers In Psychology,’ shared that Triphala contains anti-oxidant and anti-allergic compounds that help to suppress allergic responses and kill bacteria, viruses, and fungi present in the dust which may trigger allergies.

Neti Pot

Ayurvedic Remedies For Dust Allergy

Regular nasal irrigation with a saline solution can help remove allergens from the nasal passages, providing relief from congestion and irritation, shared Dr Chaudhary. “Jala Neti is an important Shakti kriya that helps to manage upper respiratory tract diseases,” he added.

As per a study published in the ‘Journal of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine,’ cleaning your nasal pathways using saline water can help you manage sinusitis, allergic conditions and vision.

Ayurvedic Massage or Abhyanga

“A warm oil massage with sesame or coconut oil helps improve overall immunity and can reduce allergy symptoms,” shared Dr Chaudhary. Massage can be extremely therapeutic for the body, especially when combined with aromatherapy using ayurvedic herbs and oils. It can help you relax, which will in turn boost your body’s immune system, and help you fight dust allergies.

Yoga and Breathing Exercises

Lastly, Dr Chaudhary recommended, “Practices like Pranayama and yoga can improve lung function and alleviate symptoms by promoting deep, calming breaths.”

A study published in the ‘International Journal of Yoga’ also strongly recommended that pranayama can improve lung function and should be a regular part of therapy.

In conclusion, by embracing the wisdom of Ayurveda and staying informed about scientific research, you can find effective, natural ways to alleviate the discomfort of dust allergies, ultimately leading to a healthier and more balanced life. While these natural solutions can be effective, it's essential to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new treatment. Combining Ayurvedic remedies with modern medicine, when necessary, can provide comprehensive relief.
